Limbic System
A widely dispersed set of structures in the brain associated with emotion, memory, and instinctive behavior.
Hippocampus
A key structure in the limbic system primarily involved in learning and memory.
Amygdala
An almond-shaped structure in the limbic system linked to the perception of fear and emotional responses.
Papez Circuit
A neural circuit including structures of the limbic system, involved in emotional regulation and memory.
Neocortex
The region of the brain associated with higher-order brain functions such as sensory perception, cognition, and motor commands.
Triune Brain Theory
A model describing evolutionary brain development from the reptilian brain (basic instincts), through the paleomammalian brain (emotions), to the neomammalian brain (logic and reasoning).
Declarative (Explicit) Memory
A type of long-term memory that involves conscious recollection of facts and events.
Non-Declarative (Implicit) Memory
A type of long-term memory that involves skills and conditioned responses without conscious recollection.
Fornix
A major fiber tract in the brain that connects the hippocampus to the mammillary bodies.
