Metabolism
The combination of chemical reactions an organism undergoes to build up or break down materials.
Cellular Respiration
The process that releases energy from food.
Relationship Between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration, and vice versa.
Cell Respiration Equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6H2O + 6CO2 + energy (ATP)
Photosynthesis Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight -> 6O2 + C6H12O6
Aerobic Respiration
Occurs when oxygen is available.
Anaerobic Respiration
Occurs when oxygen is NOT available; yeast is an example. Can make lactic acid in our body.
Cell Respiration Main Stages
Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, Electron Transport Chain.
Glycolysis
Doesn't require oxygen (anaerobic); occurs in the cytoplasm of your cells.
Glycolysis
All respiration begins with this process.
Glycolysis
During this process, glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid.
Energy in Pyruvic Acid
About 90% of the energy available in one glucose molecule is still unused and locked in the chemical bonds of pyruvic acid.
Net Gain of ATP in Glycolysis
2 ATP
