Mobility

The ability to move freely, easily, and purposefully in one's environment.

Osteopenia

A condition characterized by lower than average bone density, considered a precursor to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis

A chronic disease that results in decreased bone density and increased risk of fractures.

Synarthrodial joint

A joint that is completely immovable, such as the sutures of the cranium.

Amphiarthrodial joint

A joint that is slightly movable, such as those found in the pelvis and intervertebral disks.

Diarthrodial joint

A freely movable joint, also known as a synovial joint.

Kyphosis

An excessive outward curvature of the spine, leading to hunching of the back.

Arthroscopy

A surgical procedure that allows the doctor to view the inside of a joint using a camera.

VTE Prevention

Measures taken to prevent venous thromboembolism, including use of sequential compression devices and early ambulation.

Fragility fracture

A fracture that occurs from a fall from standing height or less, often seen in osteoporosis.

Complete fracture

A type of fracture where the bone is broken all the way through.

Infection

The invasion of the body by harmful pathogens that can lead to illness.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy

A medical procedure that uses shock waves to break up stones in the kidney, bladder, or gallbladder.

Phantom limb pain

A sensation of pain that feels like it's coming from a body part that's no longer there.

RICE Method

A mnemonic for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, a common first aid treatment for injuries.

Neurovascular assessment

The assessment of blood flow and nerve function in a limb.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA)

A surgical procedure that resurface the knee to relieve arthritis pain and disability.

Biomechanics

The study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms.
