This study focuses on developing digital and non-digital HL and literacy practices within multilingual, transnational families in the UK. Applying the FLP theoretical framework based on Spolsky’s tripartite language policy model, this study employs ethnographic methods to investigate language beliefs, strategies and practices. It seeks to answer the following three research questions (RQs):
RQ1. What are the HL and literacy expectations and beliefs held by transnational families?
RQ2. How do family members influence and negotiate HL and literacy strategies at home?
RQ3. What are the HL and literacy practices of transnational families at home?
RQ1.
The first area focuses on empirically documenting the development of HL practices among Chinese–English transnational families and examining the practical and ideological foundations that underpin these practices.
Accordingly, this study highlights the significant role that digital technologies play in promoting HL practices and activities within the home. Building on existing studies, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of digital HL maintenance and development in these families.
This study is thus divided into two sections with respect to the population investigated. The first section consists of three case studies examining HL practices from the parental perspective (presented in Study I). The second section comprises an ethnographic study that investigates HL practices from the perspective of children and adolescents (presented in Studies II and III; see Section 4 for details on the research design).
Although extensive research exists on various aspects of the linguistic lives of first-generation Chinese parents and their families in the UK (e.g. Arnberg, 1981; Boyd, 1998), children and adolescents raised in the UK have received comparatively little scholarly attention. This research gap informs several of the scientific aims and RQs addressed in this study.
