Cells
The smallest structural and functional unit of all living things.
Microscopic
Too small to see with the naked eye.
Macroscopic
Large enough to see with the naked eye.
Unicellular
Organisms that are made up of one cell only
Multicellular
Organisms that are made of more than one cell.
Organelles
The structures within cells
Light microscope
Instrument that uses light to create a magnified image of the object.
Electron microscope
Instrument that uses electrons to create a magnified image of the object.
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together.
Organ
A group of different tissues working together to carry out a specific function.
Malnutrition
Harmful effects of eating too much, too little or the wrong kinds of foods.
Alimentary Canal
A long tube extending from the mouth to the anus.
Associated organs
Organs which assist with digestion but food does not pass through them.
INGESTION
The intake of food by biting, chewing and swallowing
DIGESTION
The mechanical and chemical processes that convert insoluble food into smaller particles
ABSORPTION
Occurs when the soluble nutrients are taken up by the blood stream
EGESTION
Occurs when undigested food material (faeces) are passed out of the body.
Puberty
A stage in life when a boy or girl becomes sexually mature.
Gametes
Specialised cells for the purpose of reproduction.
