Developmental psychopathology
Study of the origins and course of maladaptive behavior.
Diathesis–Stress Model
Proposes that psychopathology results from the interaction over time of a predisposition or vulnerability to psychological disorder and the experience of stressful events.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Often begins in infancy, characterized by abnormal social and communication development, and restricted interests and repetitive behavior.
Major depressive disorder
Common psychological disorder requiring a number of symptoms for a minimum duration.
Comorbid
Conditions occurring simultaneously with autism spectrum disorder.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
A treatment method used for depression in children.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Characterized by symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
Externalizing Problems
Lack of self-control, acting out in ways that disturb others, includes aggression and disobedience.
Internalizing Problems
Negative emotions are bottled up rather than expressed; includes anxiety disorders and depression.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by restricted caloric intake, fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image.
Eating Disorders
Conditions affecting up to 5% of females aged 13 to 21, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
Dementia
Progressive deterioration of neural functioning associated with cognitive decline.
Alzheimer’s Disease
A progressive, irreversible brain disorder characterized by gradual deterioration and memory deficits.
Diathesis
A predisposition or vulnerability to psychological disorder.
Stress
Experience of stressful events that interact with diathesis to potentially trigger psychopathology.
Major depressive disorder in childhood
Diagnosed similarly to major depressive disorder in adults but less common in infants.
