The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress passed on August 7, 1964 in direct response to a minor naval engagement known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. It is of historical significance because it gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of military force in Southeast Asia.

Kent State Protests
Students react to Nixon expanding the war. They break windows and burn the ROTC building. National Guard comes in and fires tear gas. students throw rocks at them and the National guard fires at them killing 4 students and injuring nine. Federal charges filed against the guardsmen.

Escalation in Vietnam War
Conflict began as French conflict to hold its colony of Vietnam after WWII. US policy of containment led Truman to support France financially since Vietnam would be led by the communist Ho Chi Minh if granted independence. Over the course of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon's presidencies, the involvement of US increased in Vietnam.

1968, in which American troops had brutally massacred innocent women and children in the village of My Lai, also led to more opposition to the war.
End of Vietnam War- With drawl of Troops
The last U.S. combat troops withdrew from Vietnam on March 29, 1973, marking the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. This withdrawal followed the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in January 1973. While the U.S. troops left, the war continued between North and South Vietnam, ultimately ending with the fall of Saigon in 1975.
