Rheumatic Paraneoplastic Syndromes
Rare syndromes characterized by rheumatic symptoms that occur in relation to an underlying malignancy, mediated by immune mechanisms.
Malignancy
A term used to describe cancerous tumors that can invade neighboring tissues and spread to other parts of the body.
Bradford Hill Criteria
A set of criteria proposed to establish a causal relationship between a disease and its risk factors, particularly in epidemiology.
Cytokines
Signaling proteins released by cells that have an effect on the interactions and communications between cells, particularly in immune responses.
Paraneoplastic Arthritis
A de novo manifestation of highly inflammatory synovitis that precedes or coincides with the detection of an underlying malignancy.
Remitting Seronegative Symmetric Synovitis with Pitting Edema (RS3PE)
A syndrome characterized by symmetric edema of the hands and feet, often associated with malignancies.
Palmar Fasciitis and Polyarthritis Syndrome
A syndrome linked to malignancies, characterized by painful swelling of the hands and fibrosis of the palmar fascia.
Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy
A syndrome commonly associated with lung cancer, characterized by clubbing of fingers and periostitis.
Erythromelalgia
A painful condition characterized by episodes of burning pain, redness, and increased warmth of the extremities, often associated with myeloproliferative disorders.
Tumor-induced osteomalacia
A condition characterized by phosphate wasting caused by tumor production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), leading to bone pain and fractures.
Cancer-associated Myositis
An inflammatory disease of the muscles that can develop in conjunction with certain cancers, associated with specific autoantibodies.
Fibrosis
The thickening and scarring of connective tissue, often as a result of injury or disease, which can be seen in various paraneoplastic syndromes.
Scleroderma
An autoimmune disease characterized by hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues, which can have a paraneoplastic association.
Aromatase Inhibitors
Drugs used in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer that can cause musculoskeletal symptoms, including arthralgia.
Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors
A class of drugs that help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells, which can also lead to rheumatic immune-related adverse events.
