Point Source Pollution
Pollution that originates from a single, identifiable source, such as a sewage treatment plant or an oil spill. This type of pollution can be precisely measured and controlled through regulations and pollution management practices.
Examples of Point Source Pollution
Includes industrial discharges from factories, wastewater treatment facilities releasing treated and untreated sewage, and specific oil spills, such as those from the Exxon Valdez or Deepwater Horizon, which have had devastating effects on marine ecosystems.
Nonpoint Source Pollution
Diffuse pollution that arises from multiple diffuse sources, making it challenging to control and manage. This is often attributed to land use practices and urban development.
Examples of Nonpoint Source Pollution
Includes agricultural runoff carrying fertilizers and pesticides into waterways, urban stormwater runoff from streets and parking lots, and sediment runoff from construction sites, which collectively compromise water quality and aquatic life.
