Element
A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Pure Substance
A substance in which there is only one type of particle.
Metals
These are shiny and conduct heat energy and electric current.
Nonmetals
They do not conduct heat or electric current and appear dull in appearance.
Metalloid
This has properties of both metals and nonmetals.
Compound
A pure substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved.
Solvent
The substance in which the solute is dissolved.
Alloy
A mixture of two or more metals or a metal and another element.
Concentration
A measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent.
Solubility
The ability of the solute to dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature.
Suspension
A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out.
Colloid
A mixture in which the particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out.
Average Speed
The distance traveled divided by the time interval during which the motion occurred.
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes over time.
Net Force
The combination of all of the forces acting on an object.
Friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact.
Gravitational Force
A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object.
Gravity
The constant force that attracts an object toward the center of the Earth.
Centripetal Force
The force that keeps an object moving in a curved path.
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or to resist a change in speed or direction.
