Anemia
A deficiency in the number of erythrocytes (RBCs), quantity or quality of hemoglobin (Hb), or volume of packed RBCs (hematocrit). It indicates a pathological process rather than a specific disease.
Clinical Manifestations
Symptoms of anemia caused by the body's response to tissue hypoxia, including palpitations, dyspnea, and fatigue, varying with severity.
Mild Anemia
Characterized by hemoglobin levels of 100-120 g/L, it may be asymptomatic but symptoms can arise due to underlying conditions.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
The most common nutritional disorder worldwide, resulting from inadequate iron for hemoglobin synthesis, often leading to small and weak RBCs.
Cobalamin Deficiency
A deficiency often resulting in anemia, characterized by symptoms like sore, red tongue, weakness, and neurological manifestations.
Sickle Cell Disease
Inherited disorder characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS) leading to abnormal sickle-shaped RBCs, primarily impacting patients of African descent.
Sickle Cell Crisis
An acute exacerbation of RBC sickling causing severe pain and vaso-occlusive crisis due to impaired blood flow.
Transfusion Therapy
A medical treatment involving the transfer of blood products from a donor to a patient, requiring careful monitoring and management of potential reactions.
Pernicious Anemia
A type of anemia resulting from failure to absorb vitamin B12, typically due to a deficiency of intrinsic factor.
Aplastic Anemia
A condition defined by the failure of the bone marrow to produce sufficient RBCs, often resulting in pancytopenia.
Folic Acid Deficiency
A deficiency that leads to symptoms similar to those of vitamin B12 deficiency but without affecting the nervous system; often due to poor nutrition.
Diagnostic Testing for Anemia
Includes a series of blood tests such as Complete Blood Count (CBC) to assess hemoglobin, hematocrit, RBC size, and iron levels.
Management of Iron Deficiency Anemia
Involves oral iron supplementation, nutritional education on iron-rich foods, and monitoring for adherence and effectiveness.
Symptoms of Anemia in Children
Pallor, fatigue, behavioral changes, and developmental delays due to insufficient oxygenation.
Therapeutic Communication
A critical nursing intervention aimed at establishing trust and ensuring effective patient education and emotional support.
Nursing Assessment for Anemia
Involves evaluating past health history, medications, symptoms, and general health to inform treatment and care plans.
Management of Sickle Cell Disease
Focuses on preventing complications, alleviating symptoms, and addressing acute crises, including hydration and pain management.
