Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Damage to the brain resulting from an external and forceful event, excluding damage from disease, stroke, or surgery.
Closed Head Injury
Form of trauma causing brain damage without breaking the skull open or penetrating the cerebral meninges.
Acceleration-Deceleration Injuries
Injuries occurring when the body moves quickly and then suddenly stops, causing the brain to slam against the skull.
Coup-Contrecoup Injury
Injury pattern where the brain strikes one side of the skull (coup) and then strikes the opposite side (contrecoup) upon recoil.
Diffuse Axonal Shearing
Damage resulting from high levels of gravitational force causing neuronal connections to be pulled apart, creating micro-lesions.
Impact-Based TBI
Injury resulting from a stationary head being impacted by a moving object, leading to focal damage at the site of impact.
Open-Head TBI
Injury that penetrates the skull into the brain, often resulting from ballistic trauma or falls.
Post-traumatic Epilepsy
Seizures occurring as a consequence of TBI, most often associated with open head injuries.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
Degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, leading to symptoms such as dementia and mood disorders.
