Thyroid Hormones
Hormones produced by the thyroid gland, specifically T3 and T4.
Hypothyroid
A condition characterized by low levels of thyroid hormone secretion.
Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis
The relationship between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and target tissues in hormone regulation.
Releasing and Inhibitory Hormones
Hormones that influence the release of other hormones from the anterior pituitary.
Tropic Hormones
Hormones that have an effect on other target tissues to release hormones.
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
Hormone released from the anterior pituitary that affects the thyroid gland.
TRH (Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone)
Hormone released from the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of TSH.
Thyroglobulin
A protein hormone important in the synthesis of thyroxine.
T4 (Thyroxine)
The main molecule that circulates, but T3 is almost the active form.
T3
The active form of thyroid hormone within cells, converted from T4.
Goiter
Enlargement of the thyroid gland, often due to TSH regulation issues.
Calorigenic Effect
The effect of thyroid hormones on balancing energy availability.
