long bones

1. Mostly compact bone

2. Longer than they are wide,

3. a shaft of bone and two ends,

4. all bones except the carpals, tarsals, and patella.

5. clavicle.

Short bones

1. cube-like shape 

2. mostly sponge bone

3. carpals and tarsals 

Flat bones 

1. thin, flattened, and often curved

2. Two roughly parallel layers of compact bone with spongy bone layer in-between

3. sternum, scapula, ribs, and skull

irregular bones 

1. bones that fit non of the other bone types

2. have complicated shapes 

3. mainly sponge bone with a thin layer of compact bone

4. vertebrae, facial bones

sesamoid bones

1. bones that are embedded in tendon, usually in hands, feet, and knees

2. patella is largest sesamoid bone

3. protects tendons from stress and wear- provide a smooth surface for tendons to slide over

4. mainly spongy bone with a thin layer of compact bone
