What is chemistry?
The study of matter—what it consists of, what its properties are, and how it changes.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is mass?
A measure of the amount of matter in something; similar to weight.
What is a chemical?
A substance that always has the same composition of matter.
What is the scientific method?
The general process by which we learn about the universe.
What are the three common phases of matter?
Solids, liquids, and gases.
What makes a solid a solid?
Solids have a fixed shape and volume because particles in solids are closely packed, strongly interacting, and move slowly.
What makes a liquid a liquid?
Liquids have a definite volume but an indefinite shape because particles can move more freely than in solids.
What makes a gas a gas?
Gases have indefinite volume and shape because particles are far apart, moving quickly and randomly.
What is a pure substance?
A matter sample with a non-varying, characteristic composition.
What is a compound?
Two or more elements bound together in a fixed ratio.
What is a mixture?
A sample with a variable composition made from two or more substances not chemically bound together.
What is a physical property?
A characteristic that can be observed without changing a substance into another substance.
What is a chemical property?
A characteristic that can only be observed when a substance is changed into another substance.
What is a chemical change?
A change that results in a different substance or substances.
What is the law of conservation of matter?
Matter is not created or destroyed during an ordinary chemical change.
What is an extensive property?
A property that depends on the amount of sample.
What is an intensive property?
A property that does not depend on the amount of sample.
