California Driver's Handbook
A guide containing information regarding driving laws, licensing, and safety in California.
Renewal
The process to extend the validity of a driver’s license or vehicle registration.
REAL ID
A California driver’s license or ID card that meets federal security standards for identification.
Instruction Permit
A permit allowing a person to practice driving under certain conditions before receiving a full license.
Provisional License
A restricted license for drivers under 18 that limits driving hours and passenger limits.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
A measurement of alcohol in the bloodstream, used to determine impairment.
Yield
To give way to pedestrians or vehicles that have the right-of-way.
Blind Spot
Areas around a vehicle that cannot be seen by the driver when looking straight ahead or using mirrors.
Tailgating
Following another vehicle too closely, which can reduce reaction time.
Three-Second Rule
A method to maintain a safe following distance by counting three seconds between you and the vehicle in front.
