economic managment
centre-left= financial responsibilities + “securonomics” (economic stability, growth, investment), accepts capitalism but state guidance, focus on reducing debt as % of GDP
left= more expansionary, higher public spending, borrowing for investment, stronger state role in economy, less concern abt strict fiscal rules
social justice/tax
centre-left= progressive but moderate, targeted redistribution (closing tax loopholes, modest wealth taxation), avoids large-scale tax rises on middle earners
left= strong redistribution, higher taxed on wealth, corporations, top earners to reduce inequality significantly
industry/ownership
centre-left= mixed economy, private sector-led growth w strategic state intervention (GB energy as publicly owned company, not widespread nationalisation)
left= greater public ownership, rail, energy, mail etc support for renationalisation and stronger state control for key industries
welfare
centre-left = “work-first” approach, reform welfare to encourage employment, reduce harshness of past conservative policies maintains benefits but w conditions
left= more generous welfare state, higher benefits, less conditionality, stronger emphasis on reducing poverty and inequality
NHS and education
centre-left= strong support for NHS, (no privatisation) and increased funding, education reform no commitment to abolish tuition fees (focus on reform instead)
left= fully-state led provision, sig higher NHS spending, abolition of tuition fees, expansion of public services
law and order
centre-left= tough on crime and causes of crime, supports policing, anti-social behaviour measures
left= more emphasis on social causes of crime, over punitive measures, less focus on strict policing
foreign policy and defence
centre-left= strongly pro-NATO, supports nuclear deterrent, pro-ukraine stance, internationalist but pragmatic
left= more sceptical of military intervention, some support unilateral nuclear disarmament, more critical of NATO and US alignment
Environment
centre-left= major priority, green growth, net zero, state-led investment, (green energy) balanced w economic growth
left= radical climate action, faster transition, larger public investment, stronger regulation of corporations
constitutional reform
centre-left= supports limited reform, devolution, some lords reform, electoral reform debate ongoing no firm PR commitment
left= more radical reform, proportional representation, elected second chamber, decentralisation of power.
