everyone- he is bringing up the corruption of the top tier of the social hierarchy
Marry, do I, sir; and I came to acquaint you with a
105
matter. I am given, sir, secretly to understand that your younger
brother, Orlando, hath a disposition to come in disguis'd against
me to try a fall. To-morrow, sir, I wrestle for my credit; and he
that escapes me without some broken limb shall acquit him well.
Your brother is but young and tender; and, for your love, I would
110
be loath to foil him, as I must, for my own honour, if he come
in; therefore, out of my love to you, I came hither to acquaint
you withal, that either you might stay him from his intendment,
or brook such disgrace well as he shall run into, in that it is
thing of his own search and altogether against my will.
what does this mean
Charles (professional fighter) says Orlando has challenged him to fight. He is telling Oliver that he will fight him for his own honor- so he goes to let Oliver know even though he does not want to fight him. This way he can stop him from fighting him and know it's something of his own search- and not his will.
how does oliver respond to charles saying that orlando wants to fight him
oliver says that charles better kill him- showing the broken relationship between the brothers. courts become place of treachur, deceit, and violence
why does oliver really not like orlando?
orlando has great noble qualities that make him a hero, and oliver is jealous of his public popularity.

Celia. Were I my father, coz, would I do this
Orlando. I am more proud to be Sir Rowland's son,His youngest son- and would not change that callingTo be adopted heir to Frederick
Rosalind. My father lov'd Sir Rowland as his soul,
And all the world was of my father's mind;Had I before known this young man his son,I should have given him tears unto entreaties
Ere he should thus have ventur'd.
What does this quote mean
orlando and rosalind have a connection because they both respect their parents- meaning that they would respect their parents' friends. background of shared values- celia's dad woulve been pleased. they are going through a hard time- and it can bring them together
O poor Orlando, thou art overthrown!
Overthrown: his heart is overthrown bc he fell in love
Celia. I did not then entreat to have her stay;
It was your pleasure, and your own remorse;
I was too young that time to value her,
475
But now I know her. If she be a traitor,
Why so am I: we still have slept together,
Rose at an instant, learn'd, play'd, eat together;
And wheresoe'er we went, like Juno's swans,
Still we went coupled and inseparable.
what does this mean
celia thinks her and rosalind are so close "if shes a traitor i am too". so they will go into the forest together
We'll have a swashing and a martial outside,
As many other mannish cowards have
That do outface it with their semblances.

Duke. Now, my co-mates and brothers in exile,Hath not old custom made this life more sweetThan that of painted pomp? Are not these woods
More free from peril than the envious court?Here feel we not the penalty of Adam,The seasons' difference; as the icy fangAnd churlish chiding of the winter's wind,Which when it bites and blows upon my body,
Even till I shrink with cold, I smile and say'This is no flattery; these are counsellorsThat feelingly persuade me what I am.'Sweet are the uses of adversity,Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;And this our life, exempt from public haunt,Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,Sermons in stones, and good in everything.I would not change it.
The duke has just experienced his own brother, separating him from his brother for him to fend by himself. That's pretty brutal and cruel. He's comparing it to his natural environment- what we called a green space, pastoral. Contrast of the court- brother v brother. Treachery deceit and violence
Theyve been kicked out of the court and put into the forest- opposite of adam

Duke. Come, shall we go and kill us venison?And yet it irks me the poor dappled fools
Being native burghers of this desert city,Should, in their own confines, with forked headsHave their round haunches gor'd.

most important thematic question of this play: that space in the forest can transform us, or we can transform it by bringing our corruption and sin into that space.

Duke senior invites them to eat- thats an extraordinary response Orlando brings what we are used to seeing of court but the response is gentle, gentility (class) but duke seinior says the wind hits everyone equally. Hes not worried about class distinction or that hes a duke or that hes a criminal
He will help orlando even if hes expressing his need by threatening his life
ORLANDO HAS ONLY BEEN SHOWN TREACHERY- HIS BROTHER TRIED TO KILL HIM so think about that in the way he responds
