Nucleus
Protects DNA.
Lysosomes
Destroys harmful substances or worn-out cell parts.
Central vacuole
Large storage container for water, food, and waste only in plant cells.
Cell membrane
Made of two layers of phospholipids; controls what moves in and out of the cell.
Mitochondria
Where food is broken down during cellular respiration so ATP can be released to be used by the cell.
Smooth ER
Makes lipids.
Flagella
Acts like a whip to move the entire cell.
Nucleolus
Makes ribosomes.
Golgi apparatus
Processes and sorts proteins to be shipped.
Cytoskeleton
Made of proteins; provides structural support for animal cells.
Rough ER
Covered with ribosomes and surrounding the nucleus.
Chloroplasts
Where photosynthesis occurs.
Centrioles
Made of microtubules; help the cell divide by pulling chromosomes apart.
Cell wall
Made of cellulose in plants, chitin in fungi, and peptidoglycan in bacteria.
Vesicles
Transport proteins around the cell.
