Species Richess

Species Evenness

- description of the distribution of abundance across the species in a community
- highest when all species in a sample have the same abundance

Edge habitat

- found where one habitat type meets another
- where the tree line of a forest meets a farm field

Ecological succession

the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time

Primary succession

starts from bare rock

Secondary succession

starts after a major disaster or something

Pioneer species

first species to move into an area during succession

Climax community

a stable community that does not go through major ecologic changes

Seral stage

a stage of secondary successional development
