Ace
A serve which lands in the opponent's court without being touched, or is touched but not kept in play.
Forearm pass
A play using the underside of the forearms connected at the wrists to pass the ball.
Dig
A pass made after an opponent's attack to keep the ball in play. Includes playing a ball touched by blockers.
Floater
A serve with no spin, making it move unpredictably and hard to receive.
Jump Serve
A serve where the player jumps before hitting to increase power and height.
Rally Score
A scoring system where a point is scored on every rally, regardless of which team served.
Dink
A soft shot that drops just over the net, used to push the ball around or over blockers.
Attack
The offensive act of hitting the volleyball to score or gain advantage.
Attack Line
Also called the "10-foot line"; divides front and back row players.
Kill
A successful, legal attack that is not returnable and results in a point or rally loss for the other team.
Block
A player or players stop the ball at the net, returning it to the opposing court for a point or side-out.
Topspin Serve
A serve with strong forward spin, making it drop quickly over the net.
Mintonette
The original name of volleyball, created by William G. Morgan in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Set
A pass made with the fingers to push the ball high for a teammate to attack.
Side-out
When the receiving team wins the rally and gains the right to serve.
Spike
A powerful, downward attack hit intended to score a point or force an error.
Pancake
A defensive move where a hand is placed flat on the floor so the ball lands on top without touching the court.
Double hit
Occurs when a player contacts the ball more than once in succession or with multiple body parts at the same time.
Campfire
When the ball lands between multiple players without anyone making an effort to play it.
Roof
A block that sends the ball straight down onto the attacker’s side with force.
Joust
When blockers from opposing teams meet the ball at the net simultaneously, trying to force it to the opponent’s side.
Wipe
When a hitter deliberately hits the ball off a defender's hands so it goes out of bounds for a point.
