Nostalgia and culture shaped your identity
the two key terms you need to know are nostalgia and identity
nostalgia is the desire for a certain moment in the past- as defined by Wolf“ having a variety of significant, emotionally positive memories from across shared lived experiences”
and identity is a persons sense of self- as defined by Samaey “throughout different contexts explore, choose and intergrate their own values and beliefs”
For centuries, nostalgia and culture have been going hand in hand to shape individuals identities. Post tragic events or pandemics have contributed significantly in the influence of how nostalgia is percieved and the outcome of how other cultures mix in with eachother.
This combination in turn produces how one identifies.
This analysis then leads to my question-
How do nostalgic experiences and cultural norms and practices influence identity in different forms?
And from my research conducted i came to the conclusion that
Nostalgic experiences and culture influences one’s identity through experiences depending on interpretation.
In this quote, it highlights the political lens by stating how nostalgia is used in politics.
in politics nostalgia is weaponized against citizens in order to get votes in their favor. This is considered weaponization because of the blunt manipulation shown.
In this quote, the common question people in African-American culture wonder is portrayed in the perspective of the narrator and her own experiences.
This quote gives insight into the social-cultural lens as it demonstrates how many groups of minorities have lost history which impacts future generations identities.
When perceiving the futuristic lens, a solution to these identity issues can be made.
The loss of culture and memory can be replaced by newer versions. This equates to an elimination of identity crises.
A great example of this is colonization. Tragic events paired with colonization have caused much loss in history and heritage.
Many cultural groups who faced colonization, solved this issue by incorporating the colonizers culture into their own.
This is reasoned by real life situations where as locals who have been colonized by Russia, perceive it’s culture beneficial to their economy.
A major limitation that needs to be considered when enacting the solution is that, some people prefer the originality of their culture and dislike combining it with other cultures.
When combining new customs to a culture, it can be seen as defensive to centuries long history.
The call to action is evolution. evolution will happen on its own as people learn to adapt to the benefit of their culture rather than centering it on their opinions.
