Civil Rights
The rights of individuals to receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on characteristics such as race, gender, or disability.
14th Amendment
An amendment to the United States Constitution that grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and provides for equal protection under the law.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
A landmark piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in employment and public accommodations.
Black Codes
State laws in the Southern United States designed to restrict the rights of the newly freed black slaves.
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States.
Separate but Equal
A legal doctrine established by the Supreme Court that allowed racial segregation as long as the separate facilities were equal in quality.
De Facto Segregation
Racial segregation that occurs in practice or custom, even if not mandated by law.
De Jure Discrimination
Discrimination that is enforced by law.
19th Amendment
An amendment to the United States Constitution that granted women the right to vote.
Glass Ceiling
An unofficial barrier to advancement in a profession, especially affecting women and minorities.
Wage Gap
The difference in earnings between different groups, commonly referring to the disparity in wages between men and women.
