conformity
changing what we do, think, or say in response to others
compliance
a type of conformity that involves altering behaviour and opinions to those of a group to gain acceptance and avoid rejection. it is a weak and temporary form of conformity that is displayed only in the presence of the group
identification
a type of conformity where people change their beliefs (sometimes temporarily) to fit in with a group
internalisation
a type of conformity that involves truly converting behaviour and opinions to that of a group, thus involves acceptance of the group’s belief system, as well as public and private acceptance of the group’s behaviour and attitudes
normative social influence
an explanation of conformity where people conform to fit in with the group for fear of social rejection or humiliation
informational social influence
an explanation of conformity where people conform with the group because they desire to be right and percieve the group as a source of accurate information
unanimity
complete agreement from a group of people about an issue or question
bystander effect
a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim in the presence of other people
