Electrochemistry
The study of the relationship between electricity and chemical reactions.
Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)
An electrode used as a reference for measuring the electrode potentials of other half-cells.
Electrode Potential (E°)
The measurement of the tendency of a chemical species to acquire electrons and thereby be reduced.
Voltmeter
An instrument used to measure electrical potential difference between two points.
Reducing Agent
A substance that donates electrons and reduces another substance.
Oxidizing Agent
A substance that accepts electrons and is reduced by another substance.
Salt Bridge
A component of electrochemical cells that allows the movement of ions while preventing the mixing of different solutions.
Half-Cell
A part of an electrochemical cell that contains a reversible electrode reaction.
Gibbs Free Energy
A thermodynamic quantity that measures the amount of usable energy in a system.
Nernst Equation
An equation used to calculate the cell potential under non-standard conditions.
