Aztecs

Lived in Mexico. Capital was Mexico City under Motezuma. Died from disease and they were killed by Spanish people. The leader of the Spanish was Hernan Cortez.

Native Americans’ way of life (pre-columbus)

Hunt/gather (huntergathers).

Eveyone was equal, there was longhouses which was a living space where no one was too powerful or too weak. Two exits. Many Natives can live in it. Teepee were used for when Natives kept moving based on the migration.

Women were head of the house.

Ate buffalo and fish.

Died of disease, hunting, and forced removal.

Pilgrims and Puritans / New England Colonies

Why did the Pilgrims and Puritans come? To escape the rule of Britain (wanted religious freedom). From Britain to Netherlands to Americas.

Form of government? Self-govern under the Mayflower Compact.

They came with their families. This means that population would grow.

Lived in rocky soil so they couldn't farm until Native American Tribe came to help them, use fish as fertilizer.

Died from the. Cold, starvation, and any attacks from Natives

Virginia Colony / Jamestown

Why did they come? Because Britain send them to find raw material and gold while spreading Christianity to anyone there due to the fact that Spain and Portugal flund gold and Britain was jealous. Came with a charter.

Did they find gold? No.

Form of government? Virginia House of Burgesses which gave them Self-government. It allowed the growing of Tobacco.

Only men came over because they were searching for gold (“man's job"). They were super busy searching for gold and resources that they forgot to plant and gather food.

Die from: Starvation, Attacks from Natives, diseases like malaria.

French and Indian War

Between Britain and France but because we were a part of great Britain, we were involved. Britain was friends with certain tribes so Britain gave natives weapons to help fight France. Britain won. France kicked out of America. When the war was done, Britain put taxes of the Americans like paper, tea, stamps, and more. They were upset so they decided to go against Britain.

Enlightenment of America

Thomas Paine - Enlightenment thinker. Believes in independence and peopleshouldnt be in a monarch. Common Sense, people in the americans were suffering from the taxes and decided tofollow paine's belief on no monarch and how they want their independence.

sons and daughters of liberty - groups of men and women would want independence.

Loyalists - want to remain apart of Britain because they believe britain will keep them safe because britain is a global power.

Patriots - same as the sons and daughters of liberty. They want independence.

George Washington, Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Marshall, etc.

Revolution

Against Great Britain and 13 colonies (and france). 13colonies had help from france. To go against GB the colonists threw tea in Boston Harbour (Boston tea party) and then there was the Boston massacre. After this, war happened and many small battles took place. The Americans used native Americans hunting techniques to win against britain, later claiming their independence after the battle of Yorktown.

Lexington and concord, Yorktown, etc.

Starting a new country?

The people officially making Washington presidents,4 yearslater he resigned (making it set that a president can only serve for 4 years at max).

The newly USA needed a form of government. Democracy. Hamilton created the Articles of Confederation which provided the set rules of government. VERY WEAK. There was nobody to enforce the law, which would be shown in Shay's rebellion.

With this, Hamilton decided to make the constitution. But because of how bad the AOC was, Thomas Jefferson didn't want the constitution. SO Hamilton made the Federlists Papers with John Jay and James Madison. JAMES MADISON IS FATHER OF THE CONSTITUTION. Federalist papers was used to pursue Jefferson into accepting the constitution. Jefferson said that he will accept the constitution as long as they add a bill of rights.

Bill of rights - first 10 amendments in constitution. Protects human rights.

Louisiana Purchase.

Thomas jefferson becomes president and hamilton gets shot. Jefferson loves to follow the constitution, follows it rule by rule. France offers it to america for money (15 million) becahse they need it for funds to go to war with gb. Jefferson wants the land but the constitution states that he has no form of power to buy foreign land. SO he found a loophole where he used a treaty to “buy" the land.

Started in the 1800s when we got the Louisiana territory. Lewis and Clark expedition.

Main goal? See and understand the land they got from France and go beyond it.
