Azygos vein
A large vein that drains the thoracic wall and empties into the superior vena cava.
Hemiazygos vein
A vein that drains the left side of the thoracic wall and also connects with the azygos vein.
Intercostal nerves
Nerves that innervate the intercostal muscles and provide sensory information to the skin of the thorax.
VAN
A mnemonic for the arrangement of intercostal vessels: vein, artery, nerve, located in the intercostal spaces.
Thyrocervical trunk
A branch of the subclavian artery that supplies the thyroid gland and cervical regions.
Subcostal nerve
The nerve (T12) that innervates the skin and muscles of the abdominal wall below the last rib.
Musculophrenic artery
A branch of the internal thoracic artery that supplies the diaphragm and lower intercostal spaces.
Anterior intercostal arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the anterior portion of the intercostal spaces.
Collateral intercostal branches
Branches that accompany the intercostal nerves and provide additional blood supply to the intercostal spaces.
Accessory hemiazygos vein
A vein that drains the superior left thoracic wall and empties into the azygos vein.
Thoracic duct
The main lymphatic vessel that drains lymph from the thoracic region.
Costocervical trunk
An artery that branches from the subclavian artery and supplies blood to the upper back and neck.
Internal thoracic artery
An artery that runs along the inner surface of the thoracic wall and supplies blood to the anterior thoracic structures.
Lateral thoracic artery
An artery that branches from the axillary artery and supplies the lateral thoracic wall.
Posterior intercostal arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the thoracic wall and run in the intercostal spaces.
Superior thoracic artery
A branch of the axillary artery that supplies the first two intercostal spaces.
