Mughal Empire
Founded in 1526 by Sultan Babur, a descendent of Genghis Khan. The name 'Mughal' is the origin of the word 'Mugal'. It ended in 1858 when the British colonized India.
Mansabdars
Leaders and tax collectors in the Mughal government, granted land by the emperor, had power over the population, raised armies, and collected fees from the local population.
Aurangzeb
Emperor who reigned from 1658-1707, known for his belligerent nature and religious intolerance.
British East India Company
Chartered in 1603 by Queen Elizabeth I, granted a monopoly over British trade with India.
Sepoys
Troops hired by the British and French to help consolidate control over territories as the Mughal Empire weakened.
Battle of Plassey (1757)
The British East India Company won against the Mughal army, securing the right to tax Indian people and gaining trading privileges.
