AC1.2 Describe the organisation of the criminal justice system in England and Wales

Police

• Courts - police can give evidence at courts , provide protection for vulnerable witnesses and hold defendants in cells and transport them to and from court

• CPS - provides evidence for CPS and charge offenders according to their guidelines

• HM Prisons and probation service - arrest those recalled back to prison

Parliament

• Ministry of Justice - home office oversees the justice system and makes sure it is running smoothly

• oversees courts, prisons and probation service

• CPS - decides the charge based on legislation and guidelines made by Parliament decisions

Probation Service

• HM Prison and Parole Board - supervises those on licence in society once leaving prison

• courts - prepping pre-sentencing reports, supervising offenders on a community sentences and supervises drug testing by court order

CPS

• Police - advise police on charging a suspect, gathering evidence to build a case

• Courts - prepping and presenting the case for the prosecution and preparing the appeals against unduly lenient sentences

Sentencing council

• Contributes to law creation through judicial precedent and statutory interpretation

Prison Service

• Probation - work with probation services when a prisoner is to be released

• Police - facilitating interviews with prisoners

• judges and courts decide sentencing in prisons

• defendant who are denied bail are kept in custody and remanded in prison
