Chemical Reaction
A process in which substances change into new substances.
Chemical Equation
Representation of a reaction using symbols and formulas.
Balanced Equation
Number of atoms must be equal on both sides.
Combination Reaction
A reaction where two substances (A and B) combine to form one product (AB).
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction where one substance (AB) breaks down into two or more products (A and B).
Displacement Reaction
A reaction in which one element (A) displaces another element (B) in a compound (BC) to form a new compound (AC).
Double Displacement Reaction
A reaction involving two compounds (AB and CD) that exchange components to form two new compounds (AD and CB).
Oxidation
The gain of oxygen in a reaction.
Reduction
The loss of oxygen in a reaction.
Rusting
A process where iron reacts with air and moisture to form rust.
Rancidity
The spoilage of food due to chemical reactions.
Prevention of Rancidity
Methods to stop rancidity include using airtight containers, refrigeration, and antioxidants.
