Gene flow
movment of allels between populations due to migration
migration
the movement of an individual from on population to another
gene flow tends to make populations
more genetically similar over time
gene flow makes population have more
similar allele frequencies
Gene flow can interfere with adaptation
if a population is adapting to a new environment, alleles from a different environment are often not favored (are maladaptive)
if a lot of gene flow occurs, can prevent adaptation from occuring: “genetic swamping”
gene flow can also facilitate adaptation
some alleles can be adaptive acorss multiple populations and environments
allele move between populations via gene flow and help local populations adapt to their enviornment without neededing indepdent new mutations: ‘ adaptive intogression
