Neurosis
Ineffective coping with stress that causes mild interpersonal disorganization.
Psychosis
Out of touch with reality and has severe judgment, hallucinations and delusions.
Delirium
Change in consciousness that occurs rapidly over a short time.
Sundowning
Nocturnal delirium; display increased disorientation and agitation only during the evening and nighttime.
Dementia
Altered mental status secondary to cerebral disease.
Schizophrenia
Bizarre, non-reality based thinking.
Positive Behaviors (Schizophrenia)
Excessive behaviors in schizophrenia, such as delusions and hallucinations.
Delusion
A false, fixed belief that cannot be corrected by feedback.
Hallucination
A sensory experience without a stimulus trigger.
Negative Behaviors (Schizophrenia)
Apathy, social withdrawal, flat affect.
Prodromal Stage (Schizophrenia)
Lack of energy/motivation and withdrawal, occurring in adolescence.
Mood Disorders/Affective Disorders
Severe and inappropriate emotional responses, prolonged and persistent disturbances of mood, and related thought distortions.
Depression
A mood disturbance characterized by exaggerated feelings of sadness, despair, lowered self-esteem, loss of interest in former activities, and pessimistic thoughts.
Bipolar Disorders/Manic-Depressive Disorders
Feature shifts between emotional extremes from depression to mania.
Mania
Persistent, abnormal overactivity and a euphoric state.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Pattern of repeated mood swings of hypomania and depression, but less intense.
Anxiety
State or feeling of apprehension, uneasiness, agitation, uncertainty, and fear resulting from the anticipation of threat or danger.
Panic Attack
An attack of acute, intense and overwhelming anxiety accompanied by a degree of personality disorganization.
Agoraphobia
Extreme anxiety brought on by situation in which a panic attack is possible.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Response to an intensely traumatic experience beyond the usual range of human experiences.
