Sagittal (lateral)
Divides the body or any body part vertically into right and left, parallel to the midline of the body
Coronal (frontal)
Divides body into front and back (anterior/posterior), runs vertically through the body at right angles to the midline
Axial (transverse)
Divides body into imaginary upper (superior) and lower (inferior or caudal) halves
Medial
Nearer to the midline of the body
Lateral
Opposite of medial- structures further away from the midline
Proximal
Refers to the structure closer to the center of the body
Distal
Refers to the structures further away from the center of the body
Anterior
Refers to the structures in front
Posterior
Refers to structures behind
Cephalon and cephalic
Toward the head
Cranial
Of the skull
Caudad
Towards the tail or posterior
Caudal
Of the hindquarters
Right hypochondriac
Upper right region of the abdomen where the right kidney, liver, gallbladder, and small intestine are located
Epigastric
Upper center of abdomen (epi=on, above) where the stomach, liver, adrenal glands, spleen, pancreas, and small intestine are located
Left hypochondriac
Upper left abdomen where the left kidney, spleen, pancreas, and colon are located
Right lumbar
Middle right side of abdomen where the ascending colon, liver, and gallbladder are located
Umbilical
Center of the abdomen where small intestine, duodenum, and umbilicus are found
Left lumbar
Left middle abdomen where the descending colon and left kidney are located
Right iliac
Lower right side of abdomen where the cecum and appendix are located
Hypogastric
lower middle abdomen where the bladder, female internal reproductive organs and sigmoid colon are located (hypo=below, beneath, less than normal)
Left iliac
Lower left abdomen where the descending and sigmoid colon are
