Supraspinatus

Originates from the supraspinous fossa of the scapula, inserts on the greater tuberosity of the humerus, innervated by the subscapular nerve, action is to abduct the arm and stabilize the shoulder joint.

Infraspinatus

Originates from the infraspinous fossa of the scapula, inserts on the greater tuberosity of the humerus, innervated by the subscapular nerve, action is to laterally rotate the arm and stabilize the shoulder joint.

Teres Minor

Originates from the upper two thirds of the lateral border of the scapula, inserts on the greater tuberosity of the humerus, innervated by the axillary nerve, action is to laterally rotate the arm and stabilize the shoulder joint.

Teres Major

Originates from the lower third of the lateral border of the scapula, inserts on the medial lip of the bicipital groove of the humerus, innervated by the lower subscapular nerve, action is to medially rotate and adduct the arm and stabilize the shoulder joint.

Subscapularis

Originates from the subscapular fossa, inserts on the lesser tuberosity of the humerus, innervated by upper and lower subscapular nerve, action is to medially rotate the arm and stabilize the shoulder joint.

Trapezius

Originates from the occipital bone, ligamentum nuchae, and spines of cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae, inserts into the lateral third of the clavicle and acromion, innervated by spinal part of accessory nerve and C3&4, action varies (upper fibers elevate scapula, middle fibers pull scapula medially, lower fibers pull medial border downward).

Rhomboid Major

Originates from the spines of the 2nd to 5th thoracic vertebrae, inserts on the medial border of the scapula, innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve, action is to raise the medial border of the scapula upward and medially.

Rhomboid Minor

Originates from ligamentum nuchae and spines of the 7th cervical and 1st thoracic vertebrae, inserts on the medial border of the scapula, innervated by dorsal scapular nerve, action is to raise the medial border of the scapula upward and medially.

Biceps Brachii (Long Head)

Originates from the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, inserts on the tuberosity of the radius, innervated by musculocutaneous nerve, action is to supinate forearm, flex elbow joint, and weakly flex shoulder joint.

Biceps Brachii (Short Head)

Originates from the coracoid process of the scapula, inserts on the tuberosity of the radius, innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve, action is to flex the arm and weakly adduct.

Triceps Brachii (Long Head)

Originates from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, inserts on the olecranon process of the ulna, innervated by the radial nerve, action is to extend the elbow joint.

Gluteus Maximus

Originates from the outer surface of the ilium, sacrum, coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament, inserts on the iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur, innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve, action is to extend and laterally rotate the hip joint.

Gluteus Medius

Originates from the outer surface of the ilium, inserts on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur, innervated by the superior gluteal nerve, action is to abduct the thigh at hip joint and tilt pelvis when walking.

Sartorius

Originates from the anterior superior iliac spine, inserts on the upper medial surface of the shaft of the tibia, innervated by the femoral nerve, action is to flex, abduct, and laterally rotate thigh at hip joint.

Iliopsoas

Originates from the upper part of the iliac fossa, inserts on the lesser trochanter of the femur, innervated by the femoral nerve, action is to flex the thigh on the trunk at the hip joint.

Quadriceps Femoris

Group of muscles that includes Rectus Femoris and others; extends the leg at the knee joint and flexes thigh at hip joint, innervated by femoral nerve.

Gastrocnemius

Originates from the lateral and medial heads above the posterior surface of the femur, inserts via tendo calcaneus on the calcaneum, innervated by tibial nerve, action is to plantar flex the foot at the ankle joint.

Tibialis Anterior

Originates from the lateral surface of the shaft of the tibia and interosseous membrane, inserts on the medial cuneiform and base of the 1st metatarsal bone, innervated by deep peroneal nerve, action is to extend foot at ankle joint and invert foot.

Tibialis Posterior

Originates from the posterior surface of the shafts of tibia and fibula, inserts on the tuberosity of the navicular bone, innervated by the tibial nerve, action is to plantar flex and invert foot.
