The police play a crucial role of maintaining social control through law enforcement by and crime prevention e.g arresting criminals. Police are funded by the government and supported by volunteers.

The Crown Prosecution Service decides which cases should be prosecuted, advises the police, check evidence to see if there is enough to prosecute a suspect using the full test code and handles serious and complex charges. They are funded by Parliament and prepares court cases and supports victims and witnesses.

The prison service works with the police to keep offenders in prison. They are funded by the government and are different depending on the offenders crime.

They are independent from the government and funded by voluntary donations and member subscriptions. One example of a charity is the prison reform trust. Charities petition for less people in prisons and make changes in prisons for prisoners.
