What are the rules for assigning oxidation states?

  • in a compound, the more electronegative element is given the more -ve oxidation number

  • fixed oxidation states: group 1= +1, group 2= +2, F= -1

  • Hydrogen is +1 except in metal hydrides, where it is -1

  • Oxygen is -2 except in peroxides, where it is -1 and F2O, where it is +2

  • Chlorine is -1 except with O or F
