Use value (Instrumental value
-transactional, one sided
-Valued something for an end goal or the use it provides it, nothing more
Intrinsic value
Valuing something for its own sake, not gaining/trying to gain anything from the relationship
Anthropomorphism
Ascribing/attributing “human“ qualities to non-human entities
Socialization (how we as a society are socialized to think)
Children are socialized to view animals in a certain way
Parallel oppressions
-connecting how two groups are oppressed, associating one group with another
-Marginalization of animals vs minorities

Human exceptionalism
The idea that humans are exceptional and superior to everything else
Dominion view
Control and power over others, the assumption that we have the right to control and have power over animals
Stewardship view
The idea that we have a caretaker role over animals (more respectful and lighthearted compared to dominion view
Heriarchial binary
-The ways we place one idea over another (ex. Male/female, animal/plant, soul/body, master/slave, tame/wild, humans/animals, reason(mind)/emotion
-We think of these binaries as “naturally just“

How one persuades another using reason and fact
Indirect duty views
-state that humans have no direct moral obligations to non-rational beings (animals, nature) but have indirect duties to humanity regarding them
-Indirect duty to animals: don’t harm an animal because it might end up harming a human
Speciesism
-Discrimination based on species
Organic repression
-Distancing from organic elements and comfort with body, smells, dirt etc
-We are often taught to repress these things (often babies for example will be taught to find disgust with poop, even tho previously they care and have a liking towards it)
