A new style of building characterized by tall towers, detailed carvings, and flying buttresses, popular in the High Middle Ages.
Flying Buttresses
Tall arches on the outside of Gothic cathedrals that support the walls.

Beautiful, large windows made of colored glass that depicted biblical stories and helped non-readers understand church teachings.
Crusades
A series of wars initiated in the 11th century by Christian knights to reclaim territory in the Holy Land from Muslims.
Feudal System
An economic and social system in medieval Europe where serfs worked land owned by nobles in exchange for protection.
Charter
An official document recognizing the rights of a university to teach students, such as the one granted to Bologna University by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
Castles
Large stone fortresses built during the High Middle Ages to defend against invaders, often surrounded by walls and moats.

A significant economic development led by Jewish merchants, as Christians were generally prohibited from lending money.
