Federalism
Power divided between national and state governments, source of on going tension. Ex. Fed 10, weed legalization
Separation of Powers
Three branches with distinct responsibilities; prevents concentration of power. (Legislative, judicial, executive)
Checks and Balances
Each branch can limit the others; supports limited government and accountability, ex. House and senate
Republicanism
Representative democracy based on consent of the governed; limits direct control.
Judicial review
Courts can strike down unconstitutional laws. Ex. Marbury v. Madison and Brown v. Board
Popular Sovereignty
Power ultimately rests with the people, emphasized in the declaration and preamble
