What fuels the hydrologic cycle?
The sun fuels the hydrologic cycle.
What type of water is most abundant on Earth?
Salt water is the most abundant type of water on Earth.
Where is most of our freshwater located?
Most freshwater is located in ice caps, glaciers, or underground.
What are the percentages of freshwater sources?
Look at your worksheet for the specific percentages of freshwater.
Define Evaporation.
Evaporation is the process where water changes from a liquid to a gas.
Define Condensation.
Condensation is the process of water vapor cooling and turning back into a liquid.
Define Precipitation.
Precipitation is the falling of solid or liquid water back to Earth.
Define Transpiration.
Transpiration is the moisture being carried through plants and out of their leaves as a vapor.
Define Infiltration.
Infiltration is the process of water seeping through the soil.
Define Groundwater.
Groundwater is water that is stored within and between rocks below Earth’s surface.
Define Aquifer.
An aquifer is a rock layer that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater.
Define Sublimation.
Sublimation is the process when water in its solid form (snow or ice) evaporates and becomes a gas without melting first.
What is the difference between permeability and porosity?
Permeability is the rate at which a liquid can pass through a substance. Porosity is the percentage of open space between individual rock particles in a rock layer.
What information does the water table provide?
The water table is a boundary of underground water that indicates the amount of groundwater at a specific location.
How does the water table change during wet and dry seasons?
During a wet season (lots of rain), the water table rises. During a dry season (less rain), the water table lowers.
