bisphosphonates

alendronate

treats osteoporosis in women who are postmenopausal

risedronate

treats osteoporosis in men adn women who takes corticosteroids

alendronate and risedronate administration

PO weekly or daily

take in morning on empty stomach with 250 mL of water

remain upright for 30 minutes

ibandronate

women who are postmenopausal

IV for patients who are intolerant of PO bisphophonates or nonadherent

ibandronate administration

PO montly or IV every 3 months

zoledronic acid

women who are postmenopausal and those taking corticosteroids for at least 12 months

most potenent and associated with acute kidney injury

zoledronic acid administration

IV once yearly or once every 2 years for prevention

what to watch out for zoledronic acid

check creatinine and do not give if creatinine and less than 35 mL/min
