What is a continuous passive motion unit?
A piece of equipment that moves the pt passively with the intent to inc or maintain motion
Typically applied 4-6 hrs a day for 1-4 weeks after surgery
What are the indication for CPM?
To inc ROM (used mainly on knees after TKA, ACL reconstruction, or tibial plateau fx)
Prevention of post-surgical stiffness
What are some of the benefits of using CPM?
• Prevents development of adhesions and contractures that cause
joint stiffness
• Provides a stimulating effect on the healing of tendons and
ligaments
• Enhances healing of incisions over the moving joint
• Increases synovial fluid lubrication of the joint and thus increases
the rate of intra-articular cartilage healing and regeneration
• Prevents the degrading effects of immobilization
• Provides a quicker return of ROM
• Decreases postoperative pain
What are contraindications for using CPM?
DVT
Active bleeding
Opening incisions
Movement past the ROM limitation indicated in the POC
What are precautions for using CPM?
Impaired mentation
Movement that is limited by other body parts (such as the stomach)
Impaired sensation
What are potential adverse effects of using CPM?
• Increased bleeding inside the joint
• Increased use of pain medication
