define vasodilation
when blood flows near towards the skins surface to increase the heat loss
define vasoconstriction
when blood flows away from the skins surface to minimise heat loss
what happens when you are cold
you start to shiver (contracting muscles produce heat since rate of respiration goes up)
body hair goes up (insulates layer of air that helps you keep warm)
little sweat is produced
blood flows away from the skins surface to reduce heat loss
what happens when your are hot
hair lies flat
sweat glands produce sweat
blood moves more closer to the surfaces skin to increase heat loss.
why can smaller organisms reduce heat loss more easily
becuase they have a larger surface area to volume ratio, they can gain heat faster becuase there is more area for the heat to transfer across.
