What is areolar tissue?
connective tissue found under skin and around organs.
What is the function of areolar tissue?
Cushions organs and holds fluids.
What are the thin, dark lines in areolar tissue?
Elastic fibers.
What are the thick, pale/pink strands in areolar tissue?
Collagen fibers.
What do fibroblast nuclei do?
Make the fibers in areolar tissue.
What is adipose tissue?
Fat-storage connective tissue.
What is the function of adipose tissue?
Stores energy, insulates, and cushions.
What are adipocytes?
Large empty-looking fat cells.
What is the lipid droplet?
fat inside an adipocyte.
Why is the adipocyte nucleus pushed to the edge?
The fat droplet takes up most of the cell.
What is hyaline cartilage?
Smooth, rubbery support tissue.
What is the function of hyaline cartilage?
Cushions joints and supports structures like the nose and trachea.
What are chondrocytes?
Cartilage cells.
What are lacunae?
Small spaces that hold chondrocytes.
What is bone tissue?
mineralized connective tissue.
What is the function of bone tissue?
Support, protection, movement, and mineral storage.
What is the central canal?
The center tube that holds blood vessels.
What are lamellae?
Rings of bone matrix.
What are osteocytes?
Bone cells found in lacunae.
What are canaliculi?
Tiny channels that connect bone cells.
What is skeletal muscle?
Voluntary muscle attached to bones.
What is the function of skeletal muscle?
Moves the body.
What are key features of skeletal muscle?
Striations and many nuclei.
What is cardiac muscle?
Involuntary muscle of the heart.
What is the function of cardiac muscle?
Pumps blood.
What are key features of cardiac muscle?
Striations, branching cells, intercalated discs.
What is smooth muscle?
Involuntary muscle in organs and blood vessels.
What is nervous tissue?
Tissue found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
What is the function of nervous tissue?
Receives signals and sends electrical impulses.
What is the neuron cell body?
The main part of the nerve cell.
What is the neuron nucleus/nucleolus?
The control center inside the neuron.
What are neuronal processes?
Branches that send and receive signals.
What are neuroglial cells?
Small support cells around neurons.
