Stage One of the Demographic Transition Model
High birth rates and high death rates. Small population growth.
Stage Two of the Demographic transition model
Birth rates remain high but death rates fall rapidly causing a high population growth -----caused by improvement in healthcare and sanitation.
Stage Three of the Demographic transition model.
Total population is still rising rapidly. The gap between birth and death rates narrow due to availability of contraceptives and less children needed due to mechanization of farming. Natural increase is high.
Stage Four of the Demographic transition model
Total population is high, but balanced because of continuation of low birth rates and low death rates, fluctuating with 'baby booms' and epidemics of illnesses and disease. This results in a steady population.
Stage Five of the Demographic transition model.
Total population is declining because birth rates have dropped below death rates.
