King Louis is worried France will go bankrupt due to the war that France is funding in North America
5th May 1789
Louis calls an Estates-General meeting with representatives of all three estates
13th June 1789
The representatives of the third estate declare themselves the National Assembly
20th June 1789
The National Assembly swears the Tennis Court Oath in Versailles.
14th July 1789
The Parisians storm the Bastille, and release the captives. The fortress gets torn down.
20th August 1789
The National Assembly abolish the status of the nobility and issued the Declaration of rights of Man and Citizen
1789 - 1792
King Louis becomes a constitutional monarch - he is not happy about this happening
June 1791
Louis and his family attempt to escape France to allies at the border. This is known as the Flight to Varennes.
10th August 1792
The monarchy is overthrown. Louis is arrested.
21st January 1772
King Louis is executed after being put on trial. The method is death by guillotine
September 1792
The terror begins. Massacre in a prison after paranoia spreads and people believe that the prisoners are ‘enemies of the revolution’
