frontal (coronal)

Vertical plane dividing the body or structure into interior and posterior positions (chest X-ray is common PA (post anterior-viewed from back to front)

Sagittal (lateral)

Lengthwise vertical plane dividing the body or structure into right and left sides. The mid sagittal plane divides the body into right and left halves. A lateral chest x-ray film is taken in the sagittal plane

Transverse (axial)

Horizontal, cross-section plane, running across the body parallel to the ground. Divides the body or structure into upper and lower portions. A CT scan is one of the series of x-ray pictures taken in the transverse plane
