Pulmonary Circulation
The part of the circulatory system that carries deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation.
Systemic Circulation
The part of the circulatory system that carries oxygenated blood from the left side of the heart to the rest of the body.
Atrioventricular Valves
Valves located between the atria and ventricles of the heart; includes the tricuspid and mitral valves.
Semilunar Valves
Valves located between the ventricles and the arteries; includes the pulmonary and aortic valves.
Myocardium
The muscular middle layer of the heart wall that is responsible for the contraction of the heart.
Pericardium
The fibrous sac surrounding the heart, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner serous layer.
Cardiac Cycle
The sequence of events that occurs during one heartbeat, including the contraction and relaxation of the heart chambers.
Systole
The phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood from the chambers into the arteries.
Diastole
The phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle relaxes and the chambers fill with blood.
Cardiac Action Potentials
Electrical impulses that initiate the contraction of the heart muscle.
