What made Marcel Duchamp's Fountain piece controversial? What were his ideas about art?
It challenged the art world about what can be considered art. He was stating that art is an intellectual concept just as much as it was for aesthetics. This idea was unheard of and sparked a controversy and brought up the question of “what is art”
How was Edward Hopper influenced by American society, and how did he include these influences into his work?
Hoppers work depicts isolation and loneliness with his use of empty urban landscapes. Despite the usual busy nature of urban life Hopper depicts the disconnection from others in urban areas. In one of his works “nighthawks” he paints a cafe that seems quiet and lonely despite the presence of people. The people are not talking to each other not even looking at each other. Despite their proximity to the other customers they still seem lonely.
Discuss the importance of Pablo Picasso's large piece, Guernica.
Picasso painted the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War. He made it incredibly large so that it could not be ignored.
