What does permease do?
Transports lactose into the cell.
What does β-galactosidase do?
Breaks lactose into glucose and galactose; also converts lactose into allolactose.
What does allolactose do?
Binds the repressor to inactivate it and allows transcription.
What happens without lactose?
Repressor binds to operator → no transcription.
What happens with lactose present?
Allolactose binds repressor → repressor can't bind operator → transcription on.
